Though Hocking Hills State Park was just out of range for my nature-immersive road trip itinerary, visiting Ash Cave to walk amid the abundant plant life that grows in the nooks of this cavern shines brightly on the horizon. Patiently enduring time, the magnificent geological features of this cave open into a natural theater for the smaller worlds of its lush environs. Black Hand sandstone cliffs lined with quartz are held by mosses, lichens, ferns, and mycelium networks and their fruiting bodies. Chicken of the Woods mushrooms grow on an invisible fallen tree near chanterelles, which grow out of the soil—both of which enjoy the company of hardwood trees like oak and maple. A graceful duo of Eastern Hemlocks are illuminated in resplendent energy, as if admiring the streams of falling water that splash the rocks below. Had I visited the trails, caves, and gorges in this area, I likely would have added to this illustration a variety of fern species, cliff algae, and scented liverworts that live on rock walls and in crevices. Nonetheless, essential details are expressed in this drawing, such as the drape of moss beds—Prickley Beard and Broom Mosses, perhaps dreaming together about the animated life force of their dancing sporophytes.

Originally hand-drawn in ink, this limited-edition giclée reproduction is printed with archival ink on acid-free, fine art paper. The print is professionally matted for a standard 16” x 20” frame. Hand-signed and numbered print reproductions from this collection are available at 12” x 16” in quantities of 50, with unnumbered prints for sale thereafter. Limited-edition sizes other than 12” x 16” may also be produced for this artwork in the future.
