An Illustrated Collection of Nature Stories In the Midwest

This collection of drawings emerged from remembering how to listen deeply. New stories emerge when we become curious and listen to perspectives that differ from our own. More than a depiction of place, these drawings represent a series of experiences, road trips, camping excursions, hikes, and conversations with people I encountered in towns throughout the Midwest.

In a series of road trips, I travelled through each Midwestern state. In each place along the way, my relationships with people deepened through asking questions and listening. As landscapes changed, I began to see the container of how land is defined. I began to notice the obvious—that landscape expands beyond man-made boundaries and systems. I started to imagine a world that prioritizes human, ecological, and bioregional interconnection, and this inspired me to write stories about each place I drew.

The New Midwestern Nature Stories collection explores ways of perceiving natural protected areas and our relationships with land and each other. Each drawing in this collection is an entry point into an in-progress story series about land, humans, symbiosis, and impact. These drawings and stories will be available as a book when complete.
